چکیده

For future commercial broad-band data satellite networks, satellite network topology, link capacity, and routing have major impacts on the cost of the network and the amount of revenue the network can generate. In this thesis, we establish a mathematical framework, using two-stage stochastic programming, to assist network designers in selecting the most cost-effective network topology for data applications. The solution to the stochastic programming formulation gives optimal link capacities and an optimal routing strategy for different network topologies, taking into account uncertainties in long-term aggregate traffic statistic estimation. For several classes of satellite topologies of interest, analytical solutions have been derived. In particular, we give the optimal topology selection criteria for a general GEO satellite network and identify regions where a hybrid satelliteterrestrial topology is the most cost effective. For LEO and MEO satellite networks, comparisons between different routing strategies for polar constellations with and without seam are presented. The analytical solutions we have derived capture the salient network design parameters and their relationships. These analyses offer much insight into the design tradeoffs for a hybrid satellite-terrestrial network. Thesis Supervisor: Vincent W. S. Capacity Dimensioning of ISL Networks in Broadband LEO Satellite Systems

This paper considers the capacity dimensioning of intersatellite link (ISL) networks in broadband LEO satellite systems, where the major challenge is the topology dynamics. First, a general method to design convenient ISL topologies for connection-oriented operation is presented, and a reference topology for numerical studies is derived. A permanent virtual topology is then defined on top of th...

Efficient planning of satellite-terrestrial hybrid networks for multicast applications

As the satellite technology will be one of the main components of the Next Generation Internet (NGI), a naturally occurring question concerns the feasibility of providing an efficient satellite-based Internet access. In this paper, we are interested in the problem of the planning of satellite-terrestrial hybrid networks for the multicast transfer. We first develop an architectural model for suc...

Adaptive Beamforming for OFDM Based Hybrid Mobile Satellite System

Global connectivity cannot be guaranteed by terrestrial networks due to the lack of infrastructure in rural areas. Neither can satellite networks assure this due to lack of signal penetration and capacity coverage issues in densely populated areas. To bridge this gap, we propose an Orthogonal Frequency Domain (OFDM) based hybrid architecture where users are provided service by existing mobile n...

OLSR-H: A Satellite-Terrestrial Hybrid Broadcasting for OLSR Signaling

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are proposed for emergency situations because they are self-organized and infrastructure-less. However, the mobility of the nodes and the lack of infrastructure pose challenges to the routing protocols. The signaling of these protocols is affected by the same problems as the data traffic: a multi-hop environment with limited bandwidth, collisions and bit errors. ...
